Appeal for China Earthquake Victims

16 May 2008.  1100h

Even before the people of Myanmar start to recover from the most devastating cyclone in their recorded history, another major catastrophe hits another part of the world – this time in China.  This 7.9 magnitude earthquake has resulted in the deaths of 19,500 people as of the latest count by Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency, and this figure is expected to further rise.

This quake, the worst in 32 years, was so severe that whole towns were wiped off the map, whole mountainsides sheared off and highways ripped apart.  In the town of Yingxiu, almost three-fourths of their population died.  Across the province of Sichuan, thousands more are trapped under buildings – including schools.  And owing to the fact that China has a one-child policy, those children trapped underneath their schools are the only children of their respective parents.

.

With 10 million people directly affected in Sichuan, PNRC Chairman and CEO Senator Richard J. Gordon has already filed a Senate resolution expressing the Filipino people’s sympathies with the quake victims and has written the Chinese ambassador to express his condolences.

Xinhua calls for 50,000 tents, 200,000 blankets and 300,000 coats along with drinking water and medicine.

We then appeal for cash donations to help in this second major global catastrophe to hit humankind in weeks.

The Philippine National Red Cross is confident that in spite of the difficulties we are facing here at home, the Filipino people are always first, always ready and always there to help our brothers and neighbours in need.  As we have been showing the people of Myanmar our bayanihan spirit in the aftermath of their cyclone, let us show the people of China the same drive and zeal as they struggle to rebuild their lives ravaged by their strongest quake in decades.
