The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Laguna Chapter, lead by PRC Chairman and Senator Richard Gordon, is set to formally turn-over to the Department of Education (DepEd)  transitional classrooms in Calangay Elementary School today, February 19, 2010.

This project consists of four (4) classrooms, six (6) bookshelves, eight (8) blackboards and seven (7) teacher’s tables with chair which will be turned-over to  DepEd in Laguna.

The said classrooms were already visited by DEPED School Division Superintendent Dr. Ester Lozada and were inspected by Engr. Bebe Montales, Municipal Engineer of Sta. Maria who declared the new rooms ready for occupancy.

On February 5, the students of Calangay Elementary School formally used the classrooms for lectures.

“Since Laguna is one of the areas hardly hit by Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, several classrooms were used as evacuation centers, some school facilities were also damaged. Hence, the Laguna Chapter sees the need for temporary classrooms,” said Gordon.

School supply packs will also be distributed to approximately 191 elementary students of Calangay Elementary School.

Likewise, coinciding with the transitional school project turn-over is the oath-taking of Red Cross 143 volunteers in Barangay Calangay.

The construction of transitional classrooms were made possible through initial discussions, assessment and coordination with the PRC National Headquarters with the Swiss Red Cross.

PRC Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang and PRC Laguna Chapter Administrator Rudelly Cabutin thank the donors and supporters of the Red Cross for making this project possible.
