As part of the Blood Donors Month celebration, the National Blood Services (NBS) of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) will grant awards to voluntary blood donors who have helped provide quality, safe blood and save lives.
The recognition ceremonies will be held on July 28 at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel, with the theme, “Young Donors: New Blood for the World.”
For this year, PRC will give six national awards, namely Certificate of Appreciation, Certificate of Commendation, Diploma of Service, Scroll of Honor, Blood Services Outstanding Award and Testimonial Plaque. Blood Galloners or those who have given 450 cc of blood for at least nine times or an equivalent of 4,050 cc will also be awarded.
The length of service and quantity of blood collection are some of the criteria considered in choosing individual, group or organization awardees.
“Blood Donors Month Recognition Ceremonies aim to commend voluntary blood donors as they are considered to be the safest pool of donors. They play a key role in having an adequate blood supply for those in need of transfusion,” said PRC Chairman Richard Gordon.
“I would also like to thank all selfless blood donors who make up the foundation of a safe blood supply. Patients who were saved from the deathbeds owe their lives to these unsung heroes,” he added.
Pursuant to Republic Act 7719 or the National Blood Services Act of 1994, the Philippine Red Cross, along with the Department of Health, the Philippine Blood Coordinating Council, other government agencies and non-government organizations, is responsible for planning and implementing a National Voluntary Blood Services Program that will develop rules for blood transfusion nationwide.
The NBS provides a network of blood service facilities across the different regions in the Philippines. In 2009, PRC contributed 38% to the country’s national blood collection.
