Emergency Alert: Tropical Storm Sendong

Tropical Storm Sendong (international name: Washi) ravaged Mindanao, slamming it with devastating rains and unleashing flash floods and landslides that have left a horrifying trail of destruction. As of today, the death toll has reached 917. Most of the dead were asleep in the middle of the night on Friday when raging floodwaters pounded their homes from rivers and cascaded from mountain slopes following 12 straight hours of heavy rains in Mindanao. Drowning has been identified as the main cause of death. Sendong affected 29 municipalities, 278 barangays and 53,240 families (161,437 persons), with 1,194 injured and 636 still reported missing. 24,681 houses were totally or partially damaged and there are still 39,414 persons housed in evacuation centers to date.

PRC has maintained strict 24-hour monitoring of all situations in affected municipalities, with nearly 1,000 PRC staff and volunteers deployed in the field conducting detailed assessments along with relief operations, welfare and first aid services. Hot meals have been served to 2,333 persons, food items to 27,896 persons, and non-food items (sleeping mats, mosquito nets, blankets, water, hygiene kits, body bags, dinnerware, slippers and clothing to 18,871 persons.

Sendong is the 19th tropical cyclone to lash the Philippines this year. As we wage this battle against disasters, we are appealing for immediate cash assistance to continue providing relief and recovery operations as well as engage in rehabilitation for all affected communities. We are counting on your support to be able to provide food, non-foodi tems, livelihood programs, shelter and our services to the most vulnerable Filipinos in the hardest hit cities and provinces.

We appreciate your generosity and continued support to the Philippine Red Cross. Thank you!
