PRC National Blood Center earns ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System (QMS) Certificate
The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) National Blood Center finally received its ISO 9001 – 2008 Certificate from TUV Rheinland, a global provider of technical, safety and certification services, on December 17, 2010.
The ISO 9001 is an international standard on quality management system (QMS) that promotes a systematic approach towards the management of product quality.
It is a system of processes that controls every critical aspect of the organization such as management responsibilities, resource management, product realization and continual improvement.
Likewise, the ISO 9001: 2008 is a quality management standard which can help both product and service organizations achieve standards of quality that are recognized and respected locally and globally.
The PRC National Blood Centers' Quality Management System covers all aspects of critical processes from blood donor recruitment, blood collection, blood testing, processing and blood issuance to clients. It also covers quality blood services through effective customer service.
The PRC ISO Team were headed by PRC Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang, National Blood Services Director Dr. Christie Monina Nalupta as the Quality Management Representative, National Blood Center Manager Dr. Urduja Vilia Carino as the Deputy Quality Management Representative and Mr. Renato Hapan as the Document Control Custodian.
The PRC Board of Governors headed by Chairman Richard Gordon and National Blood Services Committee Chairperson, Governor Rosa Rosal were elated for the receipt of this quality certification for the PRC National Blood Center.
As part of the requirement for the ISO certification, numerous training sessions, organized by Rosehall Management Consultancy Inc., were attended by the PRC ISO Team composed of PRC management professionals, NBC staff and support offices staff since March 2009.
The ISO activities involved four (4) stages before Certification: Quality Management Training and Planning, System Development and Documentation, System Implementation, Monitoring and Audit.
"The PRC National Blood Center is the first non-hospital based blood service facility in the Philippines to earn ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System certificate. This could give another opportunity for the Red Cross to upgrade its services in terms of providing safe and quality blood for the people," said Pang.
