PRC salutes blood donors, invites public to blood donation

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) celebrates World Blood Donor day by commending blood donors who donate blood without remuneration. To further drum up awareness of the need for blood donation, PRC, as the foremost humanitarian organization in the country, is inviting the public to come and join the walk-in blood donation on June 14 at the PRC National Headquarters, Mandaluyong City to help save lives.

This year’s celebration acknowledges the blood donors who help save lives every day and encourages possible donors through an information campaign with the theme “Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life.”

The walk-in bloodletting will be held at the Mezzanine Area of the PRC National Blood Center Towerfrom 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon. Prospective donors should be in a good health and must pass all necessary health checks.

“You [donors] are our everyday heroes. Each unit of blood you donate makes a difference in vulnerable lives. The Red Cross was able to provide our share of the country’s blood requirement through the help of our blood donors who have supported our mission of providing safe and quality blood and blood products to our countrymen, especially to the most vulnerable,” PRC Chairman Richard Gordon said.

PRC organizes mass blood donation activities everyday to have adequate supply of blood especially in times of mass casualty incidents, disasters and other emergencies. “That’s why we are immensely encouraging the public to donate blood regularly, a simple and painless process that can save precious lives.” Gordon added. In fact, the PRC will conduct the mass bloodletting on the birthday of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle in the Arzobispado on June 21 in cooperation with the Archdiocese of Manila.

PRC reminds the public that blood itself is free, but through its mandate to provide safe, adequate and quality blood units, PRC still need to recover expenses to ensure that the blood is safe for transfusion, thus, there is a blood processing fee approved by the Department of Health. For indigent clients who cannot afford the fee, PRC through its Blood Samaritan Program supports them by giving discounts, supported by different individuals and groups to cover the blood processing fees of legitimate indigent patients.

Let’s be heroes everyday for everyone. Give blood. Share life.
