In the just concluded 2017 Blood Donors Recognition Ceremony on July 20, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) lauded its continuing partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) in promoting blood donation programs and activities.
In 2016, PRC has collected a total of 407,000 units of blood and has assisted 223,000 patients served with blood supply.
“We do not achieve anything in the Red Cross or the Department of Health without the people and without the volunteers willing to lead. Being a volunteer means you are a leader, you draw the best out of people. And you are all leaders when you bring your friends to donate blood,” said PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon.
He also added that everytime there are armed conflicts just like in Marawi, the Red Cross will always be first to bring blood. “Blood must be ready. Our blood flows everywhere and our partnership with the DOH is a great deal,” said Gordon.
DOH Secretary Dr. Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial who served as main guest and speaker of the annual event shared their agenda towards universal health care – “All for health, towards health for all. ACHIEVE.”
And part of this agenda is to attain blood adequacy in the country. With this, Secretary Ubial commended the unceasing efforts of the PRC in terms of promoting blood donation programs to provide safe and quality blood units.
According to Secretary Ubial, the country already collected a total of 486,000 blood units, in which 200,000 of it were collected by the PRC as of June 30 this year. She added that the target for this year is 1, 002,000 blood units.
“Everyone should be a part of the movement and the change that we want to happen. I congratulate all the honorees and the awardees for this event. Let me congratulate our long term partner, the Philippine Red Cross, and all of the blood donors and blood program advocates for all your efforts so that we will attain blood adequacy in this country,” stated DOH Secretary Ubial.
Meanwhile, the PRC recognized more than 700 top volunteer blood donors and partner organizations during the event. Two partners which include the Golden Donuts Inc. and Manila Water Inc. were given the “Outstanding Blood Services Partner of the Year for 2017.”
And also, more than 400 new members of the Blood Galloners Club took an oath led by Chairman Gordon and assisted by Col. Joel Torregoza, President of the Blood Galloners Club.
