On August 19, 2017, the Philippine Red Cross Cebu Chapter launched the Million Volunteer Run 4 in Cebu City serving as the sneak preview of the upcoming simultaneous run that will be staged by the chapters from across the country headed by the National Headquarters. Successfully conducted at the Fuente Osmena Circle going to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and Sto. Nino Cathedral for the 3k and 5k category respectively, the PRC Cebu Chapter is now getting ready for the simultaneous run on the 21st October but to be held this time in Bogo City for the North and Argao for the South.
Breaking the customary practice of having major event in the heart of the city when it speaks of Cebu, the chapter aims to showcase other parts of the province which are equally valuable in showing cultural heritage of the province as a whole.
The Philippine Red Cross Cebu Chapter has dispatched 15 Emergency Medical Technicians, 42 First Aiders, 20 volunteers assigned in every water station along the route and three ambulances were deployed along with the other service vehicles of the chapter to ensure the safety and readiness in case of emergency. The Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, Philippine Navy and Bureau of Fire Protection have ran with thousands of runners who were mostly from the youth, private companies and individuals who support the organization in its advocacy. One of the participants Sahlee Lapay said “I am running to show support to the Philippine Red Cross. This is my way of expressing my gratitude to the organization because it has helped me and my family a lot.”
Companies have supported also by giving monetary donations such as OPASCOR, Roble Shipping Lines, Ludo & Luym Corporation, S.E.A Olympus Marketing, Inc., Zest-O, Cebu Progress Commercial, Cebu Market Vendors Multi-purpose Cooperative, Brutus Food System, Inc. Others have given in-kind support. Starbucks Coffee Philippines provided coffee for the working committees and the Emergency Medical Technicians on Duty. The program was made more fun with the raffle prizes from Habagat, Sunsport and Parklane Hotel. To keep the runners hydrated, Nature’s Spring Water Resources supported the PRC by supplying drinking water. Julie’s bakeshop and Family’s Choice Cocoa made the early morning brekky. For some who have braved to run the first time to show support, IPI has sent masseurs to sooth tired legs.
The City Government of Cebu supported the event for a cause by granting permit, route, security and stage area waiving the permit fee. PRO AVM provided the sound system for a livelier Zumba warm up and cool down. As the runners do the humanitarian emblem formation, 5 drones from Fly Elite Group were covering it and capturing the runners converted to volunteers simultaneously blowing the whistles as they waive their hands up.
With the Board of Governor Joy Roble who did the gunstart for 5k and Interim BOD Engineer Jed Narvios for 3K, the supporters started to paint the city red at exactly 5:00 and 5:30 respectively. Runners were assisted by the race marshals who are from Radio Emergency Assistance Volunteers Organization (REAVO).
