Philippine Red Cross' new logistics and training center in Passi, Iloilo, to be inaugurated

In time for the celebration of its 70th year, the Philippine Red Cross, in cooperation with the Korean National Red Cross (KNRC) and the City of Passi in Iloilo , will inaugurate on April 21, 2017, a new logistics and disaster management training center in Passi.

“This facility will serve as a regional hub for prepositioned emergency relief items and supplies, equipment, and vehicles to support Panay Island and nearby provinces in case of disasters and emergencies,” said PRC Chairman Richard Gordon. “It is also an Operations Center that will strengthen an already well-established system for disaster management capacity and response of PRC and further expand our humanitarian services in the Western Visayas region.”

PRC's new logistics and disaster management training center, which stands on a 1.5 hectare lot on Barangay Sablongon, houses two warehouses, one office, two dormitories, one mess hall, and one training hall. It also has the following disaster response items: one 8,000 liter water tanker, one ambulance, one 6x6 rescue truck, one wing van truck, one fork lift, 1,000 sets each of sleeping kits and hygiene kits, 2,000 units of jerry cans, 15,000 corrugated galvanized iron (CGI), and, available for purchase, 1,000 shelter toolkits.

The new facility needs only four personnel to maintain it, and can get income from renting out its training hall and dormitories, much like PRC's training center in Tagaytay.

“We would like to thank the KNRC and the City of Passi for working on this project with us,” said PRC Secretary General Oscar Palabyab. “This new center will allow PRC to help even more people in the region should there be a need for it. As partners in this project, we can all be proud of being part of something that will benefit millions of people.”

As of April 7, 2017, PRC has poured in PHP 5 billion worth of relief efforts to the entire country, which includes the building of 77,456 houses, 514 classrooms, and 85 health facilities, as well as providing livelihood programs for 62,683 households.

Gordon, Palabyab, and some members of the PRC Board of Directors are attending the event for PRC. Representing KNRC are Gunn-Joong Kim, KNRC Secretary General; Dong Kee Kim, Head of Relief Division, Jae Ryul Kim, Deputy Head of Relief Division, and Kyung Hwa Kim, Communications Officer. Other officials attending the inauguration are Kari Isomaa, Head of Delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies; Arthur D. Defensor, Sr., Governor or Iloilo; Jesry Palmares, Mayor of Passi; Ferjenel Biron, Representative of the 4th District of Iloilo; and Marlyn Convocar, Department of Health Regional Director.
