The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and Rappler sealed its partnership with a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed during the Agos Summit on Disaster Preparedness on July 8, 2017 at SM Aura, Taguig.
The MOA was signed by Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and PRC Chairman Richard Gordon. The collaboration aims to harness the use of social media--telling and sharing more stories of hope, volunteers, disaster resilience, and preparedness whenever disaster strikes. It also aims to raise awareness and share information of best practices to prepare for and mitigate the effects of disasters.
“We welcome this partnership with Rappler, through which we can share relevant information and stories on social media. This is a step forward in strengthening ties and building good relationships and maintaining our mission to lessen disaster risks and help those in need, especially the most vulnerable in times of disasters,” said Gordon.

As the keynote speaker on the 2nd day of the Agos Summit, Gordon highlighted the importance of volunteerism and preparedness.
“Preparing for a disaster is like going to school. You predict what you are going to do. Always remember the 4Ps—Predict, Plan, Prepare, and Practice,” said Gordon. PRC, through its formula of volunteers + logistics + information technology, continues to provide efficient and responsive humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable.
“We have to be prepared for everything, so we can cope, mitigate, rescue, relieve, and rehabilitate. The best army is an army of committed people who volunteer because they want to make a difference,” added Gordon.
Agos Summit on Disaster Preparedness is a two-day event that aims to bring key stakeholders, humanitarian organizations, and volunteers together to learn best practices in mitigating risk and achieving zero casualty in times of disasters. Agos, powered by eBayanihan, is Rappler’s disaster information management portal and network that aims to make critical disaster information openly accessible to the public.
